Divorce
General:

In Sin'dorei culture, divorce is technically as easy as marriage. All that is legally required is for at least one person to declare the marriage terminated. The two may agree to the terms of their divorce on their own--these are usually simple agreements because the couple should have kept all assets separate. There is no paperwork or special process to a divorce. Custody of children by law goes to the father or the father's family.

Social Norms:

The ease of divorce in Sin'dorei society makes it nearly as common as divorce in modern American society. Though there are many reputable couples who have been married long enough to celebrate their 350th anniversities, it is rare. The same political mechanations that drive marriage, also drive divorce and remarriage.

Although there is a social stigma to divorce, it has few prohibitive ramifications in society. The church opposes divorce, as do many conservative circles. Divorce is more common among the upper class and especially within nobility. Parents often provoke their children to divorce for a perceived better match, though they cannot technically force their child to divorce.

Although the law grants fathers custody of their children by birth, fathers regularly recant this right and allow the mothers to keep the child. Socially, it is accepted as the right thing to do as mothers are closer to their children--though some bitter divorces may cause the husband to keep the children out of spite.
